Lakewood Elementary School meets the HealthierUS School Challenge
Lakewood Elementary School has earned a Bronze Award through the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) for efforts to add healthier items to school menus and emphasize physical activity. The school received a monetary incentive of $500, an award plaque, a banner to display, and is listed on the Team Nutrition web site hosted by the United States Department of Agriculture. Read more.
Lakewood Elementary School has enjoyed a reputation for high academic excellence since its inception in 1959. Lakewood is ranked in the top five percent of schools in the state in terms of student achievement as measured by P.A.C.T. scores.
Lakewood has a family oriented tradition of involvement. The school has a wealth of parent and community support which is the foundation of much of its successes. Parents, students, faculty, community members, and business partners all collaboratively assist in helping the school fulfill its mission statement.
The school received the “Red Carpet Award” in its inaugural year, and has been a six time winner of the “Palmetto Gold Award”.

Schools complete an application phase which asks for written details about their family-friendly philosophies and environments, along with methods the used to self-evaluate those efforts. They also are required to include copies of their school’s communication plans.
Schools that pass the written application phase are then screened by independent judges who rate how telephone callers and visitors are treated. Judges do not identify themselves during telephone calls or site visits, and site visits are not announced in advance.
Recipient: 2001-2002, 2007-2010.
